History of the University

As the Eastern Division of Indiana State Normal School, Ball State University was established in 1918. All of its predecessors, which are currently housed in the Ball State Administration Building, were normal schools that were owned and run under various identities.

The site was purchased by the Ball brothers, a well-known industrial family from Muncie, who bequeathed it to the state of Indiana in 1918. The state then handed over management of the institution to the board of trustees of the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute.

The board decided to rename the institution Ball Teachers College in 1922 to honor the Ball brothers’ generosity. The two universities were split apart by the Indiana General Assembly in 1929, and the Muncie campus was given the name Ball State Teachers College.

The institution was renamed Ball State University on February 8, 1965 by the general assembly in honor of its phenomenal growth in enrollment and physical facilities, the variety and quality of its educational programs and services, and in anticipation of the significantly larger role it would be expected to assume in the future.
