As society becomes ever more complex and schools become ever more institutionalized, educational experience becomes less directly related to daily life, less a matter of showing and learning in the context of the workaday world, and more abstracted from practice, more a matter of distilling, telling, and learning things out of context. This concentration of learning in a formal atmosphere allows children to learn far more of their culture than they are able to do by merely observing and imitating. Also, as society gradually attaches more and more importance to education, it also tries to formulate the overall objectives, content, organization, and strategies of education. Literature becomes laden with advice on the rearing of the younger generation. In short, there develop philosophies and theories of education.

There are many different sorts or types of education, but conventional education often determines how one’s educational effectiveness is evaluated.
As I have already said, there are different classification of education, but there are the most standout. Formal, informal and non-formal education are the three types of education that are commonly used. Let’s look at them in details.

Formal Educational System

Formal educational system is the kind that is usually delivered in a classroom environment, which can be a school, university, and college. Basic skills such as reading and writing, as well as more advanced academic subjects, are taught in a formal education setting.
Formal education, sometimes known as ‘real schooling,’ typically starts in elementary school and ends with post-secondary education. It is taught by competent teachers or professors and adheres to a set of guidelines.

Formal educational system is seen as having the upper hand. This is because people who went to school and had a higher education are deemed more employable and are more likely to earn more money. Post-secondary education (or higher education) is usually at a college or university which may grant an academic degree. It is associated with a specific or stage and is provided under a certain set of rules and regulations.

The formal educational system is given by specially qualified teachers they are supposed to be efficient in the art of instruction. It also observes strict discipline. The student and the teacher both are aware of the facts and engage themselves in the process of education.

  2. Chance of bad habits’ adoption may be alarming due to the presence of both good and bad students in the classroom.
  3. Wastage of time as some lazy students may fail to learn properly in spite of motivation by the professional trainers.
  4. Some unprofessional and non-standard education systems may cause the waste of time and money of the students which leads to disappointment in the formal educational system.
  5. Costly and rigid education as compared to other forms of learning.

Informal Educational System

An informal educational system, on the other perspective, is that which takes place outside of a formal educational setting. This is frequently the case when a person learns skills or absorbs learning at home, in libraries, or when surfing educational websites on a gadget.

Such schooling is frequently not planned or deliberate, and it does not adhere to a set schedule or curriculum. It is unstructured and can be regarded as a sort of natural schooling.
Unlike formal education, informal education is not imparted by an institution such as school or college. Informal education is not given according to any fixed timetable. Informal education consists of experiences and actually living in the family or community.

Merits of Informal Educational System

  1. More naturally learning process as you can learn at anywhere and at any time from your daily experience.
  2. It involves activities like individual and personal research on a topic of interest for themselves by utilizing books, libraries, social media, internet.
  3. Utilizes a variety of techniques.
  4. Less costly and time-efficient learning process.
  5. Learners can be picked up the requisite information from books, TV, radio or conversations with their friends/family members.

Demerits of Informal Educational System

  1. Information acquired from the internet, social media, TV, radio or conversations with friends/family members may lead to the disinformation.
  2. Utilized techniques may not be appropriate.
  3. No proper schedule/time span.
  4. Unpredictable results which simply the wastage of time.
  5. Lack of confidence in the learner.

Non-formal Educational System

Non-formal educational system can be seen as the type of education that falls between formal and informal education. As such, it shares characteristics with both formal and informal learning.
This type of education has a set schedule and is executed in a systematic manner, but it is not always carried out in a school setting. It is time and curricular adaptable, and it usually doesn’t even have an age restriction.

Community-based courses, occupational training, and brief programs that are not facilitated by professional teachers are the most frequent type of non-formal learning.

Non-formal educational system is imparted consciously and deliberately and systematically implemented. It should be organized for a homogeneous group. Non-formal educational system should be programmed to serve the needs of the identified group. This will necessitate flexibility in the design of the curriculum and the scheme of evaluation.
