Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University which is formerly known as Katsina State University, was established under the Katsina State Law No.7 of September, 2006.

The Katsina State University was conceived to serve as a nucleus for socio-economic, technological and political development of the State by producing highly skilled human resource through conventional face-to-face and distance learning modes.

It is the hope and aspiration of the Government and people of Katsina State to establish, nurture and develop a World Class University driven by modern Information and communication technology (ICT) culture.

The University commenced academic programmes in January, 2007 at a temporary site located at Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Katsina.

The Katsina State House of Assembly on April 08 2009 passed a Law that changed the name of the University from Katsina State University to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina. The renaming was in honour of the then immediate past State Governor and the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’adua.

The present permanent site for Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, a land of 1029.33 hectares along Dutsin-Ma Road, Katsina was commissioned on April 09, 2009, a day after the renaming, by His Excellency, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, the Late President of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University is a well established University with good infrastructure and is significantly ICT driven, meeting the objectives for which it was established.

The momentum of growth and development of the University achieved from its planning has been significantly sustained. The Government of Katsina State continues to provide necessary funding for the sustenance and for keeping the pace of developmental plans of the University.

The university is to serve as a vehicle for national unity, peaceful coexistence and scholarship where present and future leaders of our nation would be moulded. The Objectives Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University

The Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University are to serve the following objectives for the students and the country at large;

  • To serve as centre of academic excellence through teaching, promotion of research, advancement of arts, science and technology and human resource development;
  • To provide regular courses of instruction in the humanities, the sciences and other spheres of learning of a standard required and expected of a university of the highest standing;
  • To encourage the advancement of learning and give all persons without distinction of race, religion, creed, sex or political persuasion, the opportunity of acquiring a higher education;
  • To encourage and promote scholarship and conduct research in all fields of learning and human endeavor;
  • To widen access of higher education through the adoption of dual mode of learning delivery, that is face-to-face and distant learning modes;

Benin Republic University – What Every Student Should Know

Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina commenced academic activities in the 2006/2007 academic session with an initial enrolment of 1,225 students across the 15 different programmes domiciled at the 3 pioneer Faculties of Natural and Applied Sciences, Humanities and Education.

In 2012/2013 academic session, the University introduced 2 new faculties of Law and Social and Management Sciences and, in addition to 9 new academic programmes.

These increases resulted in the surge on student’s enrolment of the University. Also in the same year, the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University commenced Postgraduate studies in 14 different programmes for the award of PGDE, M.A., M.Ed., M.Sc and PhD.

As at the 2016/2017 academic session, the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University enrolment profile for undergraduate and postgraduate students stood at 12,672.

Programme Development in Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University

At the commencement of the academic activities in 2006/07, the University has 3 Faculties, 13 Departments and 26 programmes. In 2012/13 academic session, 9 more undergraduate and 13 postgraduate programmes were established.

Between 2013/14 to 2015/16 academic session, additional 10 postgraduate programmes were established. Presently, there are 5 Faculties, 21 Departments, 35 Undergraduate and 23 Postgraduate programmes in the University.

Programme Accreditation in Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University

In 2009, the National Universities Commission visited the University for Programme Accreditation Exercise. During the visit 26 programmes were presented for accreditation in which 16 programmes earned Full accreditation Status, while the remaining 10 earned Interim accreditation Status.

In 2011, the NUC re-visited the 10 programmes with interim status for re-accreditation exercise, at the end of the visit; the 10 programmes earned Full accreditation Status of the NUC. In 2015 the NUC re-visited the University for another round of programme accreditation exercise for the 16 programmes with Full accreditation status during the 2009 exercise.

Also included for this exercise were the 9 new programmes that were established in 2012/13 session. In total, the University presented 25 programmes during the period under review. The outcome of the NUC visit, all the 25 programmes of the University earned Full accreditation status. Another programmes re-accreditation exercise was conducted by the NUC in 2016 for the 10 programmes with Full accreditation Status as at 2011.

The result of the exercise reveals that all the 10 programmes presented earned Full accreditation status.

Presently, all the 35 Undergraduate programmes run by the University have Full accreditation status.
