Meeting the necessary Jamb Cut off is one of the requirements for studying law in any Nigerian university.
Mark, if you’ve read my blog post on the most competitive courses in the Jamb, you’ll notice that Law is comfortably ranked second.
This is due to the fact that over 30 thousand students apply to study law in Nigeria, but only about 3000 of these applicants are accepted by the small number of fifty-eight (58) universities that offer the course.
The sole factor that can increase your chances of admission to a law program is how high your Jamb score is, but there is a minimum Jamb score you must get in order to move on to the next round of the admissions process.
This means that when we talk about Jamb Cut off Mark for LAW, there are actually two things to think about.

What Is Jamb Cut Off Mark?
“CUT OFF MARK” is a term used to refer to the Minimum Point one is authorized to score before being qualified to participate in a certain program, as I discussed in my earlier article on Jamb Cut Off Mark For All Courses and Schools.
Regarding the Jamb Cut Off Mark, it is the lowest score that Jamb candidates must get in order to be eligible to take the Post Utme at their preferred school.
Any student who receives a Jamb score below this one will not be admitted to any Nigerian university unless they look into other admissions options outside of Jamb.
Now that you know what the general Jamb Cut off Mark is, let’s talk about the Jamb Cut off Mark for Law.
Jamb Cut Off Mark For Law
Although certain universities, including Ambrose Alli University, would accept 180, the minimum that any university (apart from private universities) would accept for Law is 180, the Jamb Cut Off Mark for Law to Participate in Post UTME is 200.
Since Polytechnics do not offer Law, they would have accepted a lower Jamb score.
On a scale of 1 to 10, the likelihood of being admitted to study law with a Jamb score of 200 or 180 (depending on the university) would be 2.
Right, the chances are really slim.
However, because your Jamb Score only makes up 50% of your Admission criteria, having a score of, example, 215 does not prevent you from being admitted to study Law.
Depending on the university’s aggregate grading method, the remaining 50% comes from your Post UTME, O’ level, or both.
Therefore, a poor Jamb Score can be made up for by a strong showing in the post-UTME or O’ level exams (Waec/NECO/Nabteb).
Certain Jamb scores can boost your chances of being accepted to 70 percent because the Jamb accounts for 50 percent of your admission requirements.
Jamb Cut Off Mark For Law That Guarantees Admission
A Jamb score of 280 is sufficient to study law at any Nigerian university.
Your chances of being admitted to study law at any university of your choice are fairly good (70 percent) if you have a Jamb score of 280 or above. I’ll explain why when I show you how schools determine the aggregate score for admission in a moment.
How To Calculate Your Aggregate Score For Law
The technique used by various universities (federal, state, and private) to determine a student’s overall score for admission to study law varies.
While some universities, like the University of Benin, utilize the Jamb and Post UTME simultaneously, others, like the University of AAU, use the Jamb and O’ level results, and still others, like the University of Lagos, use the Jamb, Post UTME and O’ level result simultaneously.
Regardless of the method your school of choice uses to determine students’ aggregate scores, your Jamb score will still account for 50% of the total and be divided by 8.
Here is how your average for law using your Jamb Score is determined:
• To determine your overall average, divide your Post UTME score by two and your Jamb score by eight (this is only applicable for schools using Post UTME and Jamb)
• For schools that use the O’ level, Post UTME, and Jamb, the Jamb Score multiplied by 8 plus 30% from the Post UTME and 20% from the O’ level.
• The remaining 50% is calculated by multiplying the Jamb Score by 8 and O’ level.
A high Jamb score is necessary to enroll in competitive courses like law since, as you can see from the calculation pattern above, it always accounts for the majority of the grade.
The departmental cutoff mark for law is typically not less than 70 for most Universities, thus if you scored 280 on the Jamb, you would need to divide 280 by 8 to get 35. With a Jamb score of 280, you will only need to exert moderate effort to attain this.
For entrance to any Nigerian university to study law, a Jamb score of 280 or more is required.
